Feature: Josh Clifford

After dabbling in film and video production, Josh has now settled upon illustration and is currently in his third year at the University of Derby. Hatch'd caught up with him to find out more.

For the past three years or so I've been producing freelance work under the alias of Hung, Drawn & Quartered, or HDQ, whilst studying at the University of Derby.

I began University life as a Film & TV student, dabbling in Film & Video Production before settling upon Illustration, which was the first course to grip my attention for more than a semester. My passion for cinema and television is definitely reflected in the art that I create; I'm often dropping subtle references in my pieces.

Stylistically, my work has changed a great deal in the past three years. Originally I found strengths in combining traditional line work and digital colouring but, recently, I find myself focusing more on traditional, tactile methods of working; such as screen printing. Being an avid fan of independent clothing companies, screen printing was something I've been wanting to experiment with for some time and I found it to be a really fun and rewarding process.

Looking forward, my focus is to build a body of work and a network of contacts which would allow me to become a successful freelance illustrator, but I'd also like to have a crack at designing tees!

You can find more of Josh's work on his Tumblr , facebook page or you can him on Twitter!
